Tube condition dominates. A 9800 with a fresh or low-hours tube and one nearing end of life can look identical in a photograph and differ enormously in what they cost you over three years, because a replacement tube is a significant fraction of the unit price. After that: image intensifier size (9-inch versus 12-inch), enabled software packages, monitor cart condition, and whether a compatible imaging table is included. Compare quotations on tube hours, not on headline price — and if a vendor will not give you tube hours in writing, you have your answer about the unit.

Is the OEC 9800 too old to buy in 2026?
Not inherently. It is old, and you should price it as old — but it is supported, parts are available, and plenty of theatres run them daily without drama. The mistake is paying near-9900 money for a 9800, or buying one with an exhausted tube because the headline price looked good. Buy it clear-eyed as a value platform with a known service ceiling and it does the job. Buy it expecting current-generation imaging and you will be disappointed.
How long will parts stay available for the 9800?
The installed base is large enough that both OEM and third-party parts continue to circulate, and independent service organisations know the platform well. That said, availability on any legacy platform trends one direction over time. If you need a C-arm you expect to run for the next ten to twelve years, the 9900 is the more defensible purchase. For a five-to-seven-year horizon or a second unit, the 9800 is sound.
